At Innotrans 2024, Nexrail and Stadler Valencia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the purpose of exploring a collaboration on the development of next generation dual-mode and hybrid locomotives for European and UK rail freight markets.

The intention is that these locomotives will be equipped with panto-electric propulsion, substituted by other forms of propulsion. The combination will make the locomotives capable of operating in both electrified and non-electrified sections of the rail network, thus ensuring uninterrupted service across diverse routes. “The ability to optimize the energy source for traction is an important means to minimize total cost of ownership and emissions,” says Mark Remie, Chief Business Development Officer of NEXRAIL.

The partnership leverages Stadler's wide range of expertise and platform designs in this field and represents a tangible step forward in NEXRAIL's mission to transition the European rail markets toward a zero-emission future.

"NEXRAIL is convinced that there are many use-cases throughout Europe and the UK where dual-mode or hybrid locomotives can play a role in reducing the reliance on diesel in a cost-competitive way," stated Luuk von Meijenfeldt, CEO of NEXRAIL.

For Stadler Valencia, the cooperation with NEXRAIL is an opportunity to further expand its portfolio of sustainable locomotives and to expand its user base in the European rail freight market. The alliance also serves to strengthen its position by adding a significant leasing company to its clientele, reflecting confidence in its technological advancements and commitment to sustainability.

"Our collaboration with NEXRAIL is a testament to our dedication to sustainability and innovation. It's a synergy that underlines our leadership in eco-friendly traction solutions," remarked Inigo Parra, CEO of Stadler Valencia.
