NEXRAIL selects Stadler’s EURO9000 Panto-Battery Hybrid Locomotives to move rail freight to zero-emission
NEXRAIL has placed an order with Stadler for the supply of up to 200 EURO9000 panto-battery hybrid locomotives. This EURO9000 combines up to 9MW of pantograph power with 1,2MW of high-performance battery power. It will be the first mainline corridor locomotive that can offer zero-emission transport from terminal to terminal. The smart battery module enables battery storage benefits such as brake energy storage, peak shaving and energy trading.
Stadler has won a major contract in the locomotive sector. Luxembourg-based locomotive leasing company NEXRAIL has commissioned Stadler to build up to 200 EURO9000 hybrid locomotives.
The new panto-battery hybrid EURO9000 is built on Stadler Valencia’s proven EURO9000 six-axle Co’Co’ platform design. Its multi-system architecture ensures seamless cross-border operation between Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Italy. First deliveries are planned for 2029. Launching customer is Hamburger Rail Service Gmbh & Co. KG (HRS).
A Range of Benefits Makes this EURO9000 Most Affordable Corridor Locomotive
The EURO9000’s unique tractive effort and power capabilities allow for single-traction operation on the most challenging terrain, including on the trans-alpine corridors saving the cost of a bank locomotive. On weak DC networks, the battery can boost the locomotive allowing for better performance, more weight carried and better train paths.
The most innovative part of the EURO9000 is the smart battery management system allowing it to optimize savings from regenerative braking, network peak consumption charges, and arbitrage of cost volatility by timing of energy purchase and recuperation. The combination of all these benefits makes the panto-battery hybrid EURO9000 more affordable to operate (TCO) and more versatile than other models.
Milestone for emission-free freight transport
“We are proud to support NEXRAIL in bringing the EURO9000 battery-bimodal locomotives to market,” said Iñigo Parra, CEO of Stadler Valencia. “This order highlights our joint commitment to sustainable innovation in rail freight. By combining high-power electric performance with emission-free battery operation, the EURO9000 sets a new benchmark for flexible, green traction solutions across Europe.”
“NEXRAIL is excited to lead the European locomotive market toward a zero-emission future. The Stadler EURO9000 is an important step forward in that transition because it eliminates the needs for diesel traction and offers freight operators completely new benefits of having battery storage on board”, notes Luuk von Meijenfeldt, CEO of NEXRAIL.
Adem Gülaz, CEO of Hamburger Rail Service: “The panto-battery EURO9000 offers HRS a unique combination of flexible traction on-and-off the catenary, high tractive effort for our heavy loads, and zero-emission operation for our rail construction logistics business.”
"This order represents the next key stage in the growth and development of NEXRAIL. Both teams have worked extremely hard to deliver this zero-emission main line locomotive for operation on key trunk routes across Europe", adds Neil Bennett, Chairman of NEXRAIL.
